2009 Federal Income Tax Information


The following information may be helpful to you in completing your tax returns. 2009 Forms 1099-DIV for each of the Funds were mailed to direct shareholders during the first week of February 2010. Direct shareholders may also be able to access electronic versions of their 2009 tax information, certain prior year tax information and certain account statements through our website, although 2009 information may not be immediately available.

Effective December 31, 2009, Third Avenue Value Fund, Third Avenue Small-Cap Value Fund, Third Avenue International Value Fund and Third Avenue Real Estate Value Fund offer two share classes -- Institutional and Investor. Existing shareholders of these Funds prior to December 31, 2009 were automatically grandfathered into the Institutional Share Classes. No distributions were made with respect to the Investor Share Classes of these Funds during 2009.

Third Avenue Focused Credit Fund commenced operations on August 31, 2009 with two share classes -- Institutional and Investor. The initial distributions with respect to both of these share classes took place on December 22, 2009.

2009 Supplemental Information for State Reporting Purposes

Information Concerning U.S. Government Obligations

During 2009, the Third Avenue Funds may have held investments in U.S. Treasury Securities.

Certain states and local jurisdictions may allow you to exclude from your taxable income that portion of a mutual fund's dividends which is treated as derived from U.S. Government obligations. In certain states this exclusion may not be allowed, unless a threshold percentage of the mutual fund's assets consist of obligations of the United States or its possessions. The laws in each jurisdiction may vary. You should consult your tax adviser.

Certain states and local jurisdictions may impose an intangibles tax or personal property tax on the value of certain intangible assets including mutual funds. Depending upon the laws of the specific jurisdiction, the value of such assets attributable to U.S. Government obligations may be exempt from these taxes. You should consult your tax adviser.
